(Post 34) Planning- Directorial style

Directing style I want to use
I'm not sure of the style of directing I am planning to use, but there are a few techniques I will
use:
  • Slow motion filming.
  • Flashbacks.
  • Combination of close-ups and wide-shots.
  • A mixture of short and long shots.
I am using these techniques to create a unique, interesting video that creates a clear narrative.

Inspiration:
David Wilson:
After researching this music video director, I was rather inspired by his use of multi-media and
unusual techniques in the direction of his music videos.

I decided against going 'all-out' and using cross-media techniques as David Wilson does as I am not experienced in this field, and my idea is based more around a naturalistic, live-action narrative that uses unusual forms to portray the story, but remains all live action. I was inspired, however, to make my idea a little more interesting. At the start of my idea, I was sure of the flashback idea and had a vague plan to use a different way of portraying this, but after watching his videos and gaining inspiration from them I was encouraged further to develop this idea in a creative, original way. This developed my plan to overlap clips to show flashbacks.
If I was to create a new idea later, I would be likely to take inspiration from this director, as I found him vastly interesting and inspirational in his use of multi-media and unusual techniques.

Daniel Alexander Harris:
After researching more music video directors, I found this director who uses colour and shots to portray emotion and tension. After ages of looking for music video directors that I found inspirational, I had almost given up. I decided rather than looking at random directors, I would look at a music video which I already found inspirational and interesting. This video is the music video for the song 'The Moments I'm Missing' by the artist 'Nina Nesbitt':

I was really inspired by this videos use of colour to portray emotion and match the music. After researching this director, I found that he commonly uses colour in this way. Some of the time, he uses unusual ways of portraying this (through projection and colour grading), but all of the use of colour is used spectacularly. I was inspired by this to use colour more. Specifically, I am going to use the colour of my costume to infer to the audience the emotions of the characters. For example, after the break-up, both characters will be wearing black, plain clothes. This will show how they feel downcast, upset and dull without their other half. This is effective as it portrays the emotion of the character without any dialogue or action.
Moreover, I am going to experiment with the colouration and colour grading of the video. The sections in the past will be bright and happy, with bright primary colours and the present will be darker and duller, more subdued colours. This will further show a juxtaposition between the time frames. This was inspired by this director as I was trying to think of ways to include his style.
In his work, he tends to use short, snappy shots throughout, with some surprise longer shots to add emphasis to the lyrics and emotion. I am going to use certain areas of shorter shots to portray the climax of the music, and the emotion in the lyrics.
