(Post 25) Feedback of my Audience Research

Do you watch music videos:

First, I found a few interesting trends- the number of people who watched music videos were slightly more than those who didn't. This trend was interesting, as the majority of those who said they did watch music videos were a younger generation (teenagers). Moreover, all of the participants said that they believed that the audience for music videos are younger generations, particularly teenagers. This shows us that there is a wide audience for music videos, but this audience is mostly teenagers. This doesn't really change my idea, as my audience was always a younger generation, but it is interesting to note.

How do you watch them?

The majority of answers to this question revolved around the internet. Those who stated they did watch music videos were mostly younger, and most of these suggested that they used the internet to watch them. Specifically, it was common to use streaming sites, such as Spotify and Youtube. This is mainly due to ease of access, as these sited are specifically for music. They enable music to be streamed quickly and easily, which is attractive to those with a busy life- particularly teenagers and younger people. A small percentage of those who answered also mentioned using the music channels on their television, as background music. This was more to listen to the music, rather than watch the music video, but mainly used this for ease as well. Overall, this didn't really change my distribution idea, as I was going to put it on Youtube anyway. This rather accentuated my decision to do this, as I can see that it is a common place to watch such videos.

How often do you watch them?

After this research, I discovered that most people only watch music videos roughly once a week or fortnight. This may be because they tend to watch them when their favourite bands or artists release new music or music videos. This suggests that people tend to watch music videos because of their favourite artists.

Why do you watch them?

As previously stated, people tend to watch these music videos if their favourite artists release them (especially if they don't release a lot, or they like them a lot). However, one person stated 'to bond with my son' and I felt this was nice as it shows how music really brings people together. Most people watch them for their favourite artists, or to listen to the music itself- Youtube has a large number of users who go to listen to music and sometimes people stay for the video.

What is your favourite genre of music?

After carrying out my research, I discovered that a lot of people's favourite genre of music was unclear- most people said they felt their favourite genre was mixed, and that they didn't really have a favourite. This question was less relevant, as it was only to test the audience for my genre of music (Indie-Rock). This was a more positive result, as they seemed not to mind the genre of the music. One person did say they enjoyed Indie music the most, which was good.

Who is the audience for music videos?

It was very apparent from these questions that the audience of music videos are teenagers. Everyone asked said young people, or specifically teenagers, which was expected. This is a positive thing for my idea, as I am planning to aim my idea more towards younger people. This is successful as it shows that there is an audience for my idea.

In your opinion, are music videos an effective form of advertising?

This question had a little issue, as it was unsure whether we were talking about advertisement for the band, or advertisement for products in the videos themselves (eg- brands like Beats, Gucci). However, after explaining that this meant for the band, people tended to say that they felt music videos are an effective form of advertisement. They said they felt the band was effectively advertised in the video, and that it encourages an audience to listen to the band further.

How do you feel about wider representation in music videos?

Most people answered this by saying that they believed the current representation of LGBT+ couples in media is poor. The representation usually makes it seem as if the couples are unhappy, or have poor mental health. There is a higher percentage of mental health issues in LGBT+ youth, but there is little representation of those who are happy within their relationships, or in love. The majority of those who commented on this were younger people, and the older generations I asked tended to say they didn't notice or thought it adequate. This is interesting and seems to show the generation difference. Moreover, the majority of these people tended to say they wanted to see more representation in media. This doesn't change my idea but makes me more comfortable that there will be an audience for it.

Have you heard of the song 'Youth' by Daughter?

The majority said they hadn't heard the song I am using. A few people said they knew it, and these were mostly younger people. I thought that this song would be rather unknown before this research, as it is by quite a small British band. A few of the younger people said they had heard the song I am using, which suggests a more teenage audience for this band. This shows how my teenage audience is rather apt, as the audience for the music video tends to revolve around the music itself. Moreover, the main use of a music video is to advertise the artist, and by using a rather unknown band, it might allow people to listen to more of their music.

How do you feel about relationships in music videos?

The audience tended to say that they liked relationships being portrayed in music videos, only if they were relevant. The major feel of this question was that the audience likes a good story, that isn't boring or cliche, so I could develop a story based around a relationship, as long as it is relevant and interesting. I believe I have an idea that will be new and not cliche.

(Give brief outline of my idea) Do you like this idea?
It was quite difficult to explain my idea to an actual audience, but I felt the feedback was really positive. Everyone I asked said they would watch my video, even though a majority hadn't heard of the band. I was a little nervous about pitching my idea (especially to an older generation), as I was unsure how people would react to the representation of LGBT+ youth. There is better equality and representation than ever in our modern society, but Wymondham is a small town that is mostly filled with older people. There are certain views that are almost ingrained in these generations, and I didn't want to offend or anger anyone. However, after doing this research I felt much better about my idea, as the feedback was all positive.

Overall, the trends of the audience research we completed were rather expected. I largely expected for people (especially older people) not to really watch music videos regularly, or at all. Moreover, I picked a rather small, niche band so I was expecting people not to have heard of their music. This research hasn't really affected my idea, but it has accentuated my idea- I can see that there is an audience for music videos, and people seem to like my idea. I am pleased with our findings, as the research seemed rather positive.
