(Post 14) My Plan
What is your idea for your coursework at the moment?
At the moment, I have decided on a rough story, and a general idea. My idea will revolve
arounda young couple. They will be two, teenage (roughly around 18) women. However, the
majority of the video will mainly focus on one of the girls, and it will develop around her. Their
relationship is wonderful, but was flawed, and they have broken up (which will become
apparent towards the end). To portray this, I am planning to create a sort of 'split-screen',
between the present and the past. This will take place in the form of photographs. Partway
through, the main character takes out a pile of photographs from her bag, she looks at a few,
and is astounded that one starts to move. Steadily, more and more move, and they begin to
tell a story to the audience. They show, at first, how amazing their relationship was, and how
happy they were. The main character sticks all of the pictures onto the wall, and stands back
to get a better view of them (this is the only shot I'm sure of). She realises there is still on on
the floor (perhaps under her shoe), and she reaches to take it. This final photo shows them
arguing, and the main character storms out. However, once she has lest, her girlfriend mouths
'I love you, I'm sorry' (I don't know if that will be the only thing she says/does, as this has to
be a pinnacle moment, so she might have to do something else as well, to give it more impact).
The main character will realise what she has missed, and will run to her girlfriends house. It
will end with her hugging her girlfriend in the doorway, and everything seems better.
I love the idea of using meaningful colours and colour schemes representing emotion, so I am
planning to use different colours, in the different times and locations to represent a change in
time, place and emotion. The photographs will all be brightly coloured, and saturated with
colour. The scenes with the character inside will be darker, and the colour scheme will focus on
more neutral colours (white, grey, black). In each situation, the characters will wear clothes that
match the particular colour schemes (bright, primary colours for the photos, and dull, neutral
colours for the present). This will portray a change, and will show how the relationship really
enriched the characters lives, and without it, it is dull and dark.
I got inspiration for this idea from a game, called 'Life Is Strange'. This game focuses upon
how relationships develop through time, and how any small thing can change everything. It
takes this in a more literal sense (as the main character can travel back to change the past),
but the idea gave me inspiration for my 'split-screen' scenario. Moreover, the games biggest
dilemma is what the main character would do for her best friend/girlfriend, which inspired my
ending. Also, in the game, photographs play a large part, as the main character is a
photographer, and she takes photos throughout the game. This gives her the ability to travel
to the past, and represents how photos are a snapshot into a different time and place. This
inspired the idea of photos in my film, as I liked the idea that photos can transport you into a
different place, and time (I'm just not going to take it so literally).
Finally, the only shot I have planned, is a replication of a shot in 'Life is Strange':
After tacking the pictures to the wall, the character will step back, and I will replicate this scene,
and the shot will be taken from behind, showing the back of her head, with the pictures
(which will all be moving) in front.
Who are you planning on working with or are you wanting
to work alone?
For my music video, I have decided to work alone. This is for a few reasons, but mostly
because I already have such a specific idea in my head that I really want to do. I would love to
work in a group again but feel that if I work on my own, I can work to make it exactly how I
imagine it. I enjoyed working in a pair last time, but felt that the idea was more their vision (for
the opening), and really want to focus on an idea that I am so passionate about.
Because I am on my own, I obviously have to do everything in the making process. I'm looking
forward to this, as I usually take less or a role in the editing and filming, and tend to focus on
storyboards and plot. This is going to give me the opportunity to develop my skills, and learn
techniques. This is also a little daunting, as I've never done a project so big, and complex, but
I look forward to giving it a go.
Where do you want to film?
There are lots of locations where I want to film. The main location is going to be in a bedroom.
I haven't decided who's bedroom I will use, and where exactly I will film, but I imagine a large,
plain room, with bare walls. The colour scheme will matter (as I am planning to use colour to
represent emotion), and the room will ideally be white, but any neutral, plain colour will be
perfect. This will be filmed last, and therefore will be filmed in the colder, winter months. This is
ideal, as the cold can represent grief and loneliness. This will juxtapose the birght, sunny feel
of the photographs.
The other locations will all take place in the photographs. Because of the amount of photos I
plan to include, there will be many other locations. These locations will all be wide, open places,
as this will portray a sense of freedom and happiness (which will juxtapose the dark, lonely
bedroom). For example, a large field, a garden, the beach. These will all be happy, summery
locations, but will preferably be filmed on different days, to show the progression of time.
